2nd Tutorial

Today I spoke with Sally about my project so far. We discussed further about my mood boards and chosen target market. It was made clearer to me that I need to do some more research into the demographic I am aiming for as although I know its an adult female I need to narrow it down more.

Some questions I need to think about the target market are:

Do they have an eye for design? Do they have an inner christmas-zilla or inner creative personality which when the opportunity arises they enjoy going all out for?

What are their aspirations?

What would catch their attention in a shop when buying for christmas amongst all the other products?

I need to also look into creating more textured surfaces and including more purple/plum tones.

I also need to get into print and do some foiling particularly using gold.

The 3Dimensional things I’ve created so far are quite interesting and I need to try out other techniques such as laser cutting.

I think it went well today speaking with Sally and am happy with where I am heading although I need to do a lot more work I think.

Diss Continued

I have been struggling to balance my time between my project work and dissertation work so have decided I am going to prioritise my dissertation work on Tuesdays although I do want to get into the habit of doing a little bit often. Having re read what I have already written I have a couple of queries I need to ask Ashley next time I see her.

Firstly I have adjusted my title however it now feels like I am going down the health effects and results of the ‘tyranny of slenderness’ in Western Society as I have thought more about what my personal argument is. My current rewritten title is:

Has Western Society’s stance on female body image in relation to slenderness become idle in forfeiting culpability for the ‘ideals’ women feel pressured to strive for to the media and fashion industry?

I want to look deeper into the reasoning behind the idea of the ‘tyranny of slenderness’, Western Societies ideas of slenderness and the reasons behind the results of health problems women can be associated with. I will see what Ashley thinks of this next time I speak with her.

I do think I am going down a route which is different to what I initially set out to explore as I am not sure how I will incorporate Plus Size models and Sports Role models although maybe with more thinking I will find a connection.

My main area I need to research further into is the historical arguments and findings before the media and fashion industry were so widespread.

Bauble Galore

In digital stitch I created a small purple bauble which although it is only one singular design on its own it was relatively quick to stitch out once I had the design finalised. It would be interesting to scan or photograph this and manipulate it digitally so that the technique is still visible but could be worked into a pattern.

I also created a christmas tree pattern on the digital stitch programme which would take a rather long time to stitch due to the different colours I used and the text which is also included but I think it was quite effective. I might go in another day when it isn’t so busy in the stitch room and see if it an option to stitch it out.

Workshops: Digital Stitch week 1

On Monday we went through the basics of digital stitch to get us used to the programme and the different options we can use. Maggie gave us all the same template to work with of quite simple shapes but this was so that we could all follow her directions and get used to the processes.

Digital Stitch 1

Today I wanted to try out my own drawings and turning them into digital stitch samples. I decided I would try and use my pen and pencil drawing of a pine cone. This will be appliquéd so I will use two different fabrics and then the line will create some detail.

I will stitch it out on Monday as I didn’t have enough time left for the stitching as it can take some time to use this method. The objects shape needs to be stitched on the top material choice then that needs to be cut out. Then I need to place the cut out shape onto the background fabric have that stitched directly on using the shape. Then change the thread and place back so that the lines creating the details and inner shapes can be stitched in.

1st Tutorial

I had my first tutorial for the project today with Keireine. I think it has helped to open my mind to more ‘out of the box’ ideas instead of keeping to what I know and automatically go to. We discussed taking my work down a more 3D avenue looking at suspending things from my walls such as ivy and holly. We also discussed experimenting with making my own wreaths out of different materials so I am going to try using Salt Dough. Keireine has leant me a book to instruct me and give me ideas.

We spoke about who my client would be and I initially think it will be adult females.

Also Keireine spoke of trying some of the Wednesday workshops there are so will look into what will be most appropriate to my project.

Finally I need to do a lot more drawing, using a variety of scale and substrates with different media.

Independent Study Day

Today was a planned London Trip for anyone who wished to sign up. Normally I would loved to have gone on the trip and I had signed up but sadly I felt I needed to spend the day on my own work for my project. Although London is full of inspiration whether you go to a gallery or just sit in a cafe and see the world pass by I thought that at that current point in time I needed to spend as much time as possible on my work. I have done quite a lot of research although I will admit not all primary since the christmas stock and decorations are not quite out in the general publics view.

Instead I spent the day working more into my mood boards which I still feel are lacking in some ways. I need to clear my mind and make sure I am absolutely positive of where my vision of my project is going. I feel I made quite a lot of progress and have a better understanding of where I am going.

First Tutorial Back

I had my first tutorial with Ashley today since being back and found it really helpful. Although I feel I have got a relatively good start to the whole dissertation in terms of preparation – I’ve got a couple of documents full of quotes from books and some website articles – I have been struggling to transfer the quotes I’ve found into my writing. Ashley seemed pretty happy with how I’ve got started however which is positive as I was worried that maybe I was behind schedule but this isn’t the case.

We spoke about ways to develop my writing such as to use language which is a bit more developed I.E. ‘examine’, ‘explore’ and ‘investigate’ instead of more simpler terminology I.E. ‘looking’. I also need to elaborate more in areas where I have made my points too succinct. I need to treat the reader as if they have no clue what I am writing about and what my argument is about. I also need to keep my references up to date in my writing so that I am not wasting time down the line having to find which book had which quote.

I need to work on my title a bit to develop it and make it more into a research statement. I need to be clear at all times about what I am investigating.

I have been struggling with some of my referencing as in when I find a quote in a book from another theorist I don’t know who to reference – the author of the book I’m currently reading or the person they have quoted. Although we did briefly speak about this I need to ask again in my next meeting as having gone back to make the changes we spoke about I’ve confused myself again.

I’m going to try and get a couple of books out that Ashley mentioned however The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf isn’t available until after my next tutorial.

Workshops: Digital Stitch

I have signed up to the 4 afternoon slots for digital stitch over the next fortnight. I want to develop this skill in stitch as I am not as confident in this from previous workshop sessions. I have a couple of ideas of what i want to try but I will speak with Maggie our stitch technician to see what she thinks and recommends.

I want to try and make a screen too to refresh my mind of this method but will concentrate on stitch initially.

I’ve started my sketchbook from the beginning and using it to demonstrate and note ideas and how I am going to develop them further. I have decided I am going to concentrate on designing for Tom Smith which is a more traditional line and focuses on Christmas.

I’ve started by brainstorming my theme of christmas with all the different things connected to it. Then I found some imagery to get ideas flowing.

I have also been doing some general drawings of my own to get back into the swing of it. I think I will definitely be going down the route of combining smaller objects i.e. baubles and holly.
