Plus Size

I think I have worked out how I can include the current changes in our culture in connection with plus size models. Since I am going to look at the historical background of fuller shaped women being found attractive at the time I can compare this to the current change in plus size models being more widely used and not just for plus size clothing. There is more use in the media of plus size models and one example in particular which has stood out to me is in Sports Illustrated magazine which is known to show very slender women with hardly any fat on them. This year was the first time when an issue had an advertisement with a plus size model in it. The company Swimsuits For All would have paid a lot of money to have the page to advertise but its a sign of a step in the right direction for women of different shapes and sizes.

Interim Presentation

Yesterday I rushed from the doctors back home as had left my research folder there straight back to uni to try and get back in time for my group session. It was a very close call but as it was my birthday they waited the couple minutes for me to arrive thankfully. Steph went first and really impressed everyone with her work and the progress she has made. I was rather nervous to go next but I didn’t have any problems in filling the five minutes of presenting and was pretty much perfectly timed which made me feel a bit more confident about my work and path so far.

The feedback I received was pretty positive from my peers, Helen and the International Greetings consultant. I feel I have come out of the discussion feeling more positive about where I am heading with my project. It was agreed that doing the wrap option was right for my designs and clientele. I am designing for Tom Smith focusing wreaths from christmas as my theme so one of the constructive pieces of advice I was given was to put more imagery of wreaths on my mood board. I also need to collect a lot more imagery of shops and shopping centres which are currently putting up their christmas decorations and products.

Another thing that was noted is that since I specified the deep plum and gold colours are my main ones I need to use them a lot more throughout my work and experimentation. I need to do a lot more drawing of anything really connected to christmas. Then I can combine and manipulate the best outcomes from my sketch book but I currently have a relatively small collection of my own imagery to work with.

I also need to head into the workshops as although I am primarily interested in stitch for my project I did express interest in doing some print. I also need to develop my batik experiments with needle felting as I expressed I wanted to try developing one of the samples with this to create more texture.

One of the techniques which was discussed as possibly being quite effective was lino printing. I have some experience of lino printing from my art foundation. I really enjoyed it and found it to create really effective samples so I will order my own kit to experiment with at home.

My scanned in tinsel intrigued those listening and they proposed I experiment more with it since it could add a texture and sparkle which my currently relatively flat drawings and imagery are missing.

I need to start thinking about my final pieces and possibly look into making them more 3D especially since I’m looking into producing patterns with wreaths maybe have a more prominent image as 3 Dimensional.

The presentation and feedback was really useful for me to visualise where I am going next with my project.

Experimentation of Wreaths

This evening I have tried out a technique my sister told me about which she is using to make christmas decorations with however I have altered it to work for wreaths.

I used PVA glue and brown string to wrap around a balloon which once dry I can pop and will be left with a 3 dimensional wreath type shape. It was quite a messy technique but once I had another layers I could see it taking shape. It will be interesting to photograph and scan and possibly attach things to depending on how strong it is.

Introduction developed further

I have been trying to develop and work into my introduction more as this is currently relatively short for what it should be. I have again been too succinct in my writing so need to make it clearer what I will be exploring. Although I think this is will be a work in progress area as I am writing about what I will be exploring through out my dissertation so until I have a clearer idea of chapter 2 and 3 I can’t comment too much.

I have tried to include why this topic interests me and what makes it personal to my own life. The family connections are the more I think about it the reason I am interested in this subject as body image has affected a couple of generations in my family.

TINSEL

I bought some red tinsel the other day as I thought it would add a bit more ‘christmas’ to my studio space. Before suspending it in the studio I decided to play around with it in the scanner. I think the imagery created could be interesting backgrounds to work on. There is a feeling of lots of texture in the flat images and it catches the light really well. Here are a couple of examples.

Studio Space

My studio space currently looks like a christmas explosion has occurred all over it. This is a good thing as I need to surround myself with christmas inspiration but it is rather busy which Im not very used to. I tend to prefer a neat clear board but for this project I am willing to accept it won’t be that way.

Re worded my title

After speaking with Ashley I have tried to re-word my title as it didn’t roll very well. My altered title now stands as:

Examining Western Society’s attitude towards female body image in relation to slenderness and whether it forfeits responsibility for the ‘ideals’ women feel pressured to aim for to the media and fashion industry.

I think this gives a clearer explanation of what I am going to focus on in scope to explore areas which are connected to both the media and fashion.

Print Workshop

Today I made a screen using some of my small drawings I have produced so far. This was really a refresher for myself since I haven’t made a screen in a very long time as I haven’t done much screen printing in past projects. I really enjoyed it but forgot how long it takes. I’m glad I did it though as now I feel a lot more confident about going into the print room and making up my own screens by myself.

This was the original layout I wanted as I thought it would be good in a repeat however there were some marks on the screen which meant I had to manoeuvre the images around. Also this was only really meant as a practice to get ideas and see what worked well as some of the lines will be too thin and may not work too well.

Since there is quite a lot of waiting around when making a screen I decided to try a bit of batik.

I have decided I will needle felt into the left sample and make it more like a wreath.

The right two visuals I will work into further in separate ways. I will appliqué the bauble onto another piece of fabric and maybe add some stitch. I plan to scan the bow into photoshop and manipulate it further.

Pine Cone

Today I stitched out my pine cone using appliqué and digital stitch. I am really happy with how it has turned out and think it was very successful. I think this could be a possible lead for the gift tags of my final collection. But I will need to think about this more thoroughly.

Development of Mood Boards

My mood boards feel like they have taken me ages to produce but I think because I have started one and then started another then gone back to finish the first started it has dragged it out a bit. I have struggled the most with my client board as I have found it hard to picture exactly who my target market it. At first i thought my target market was a youngish newly wed female who was hosting her first christmas so wanted everything to be perfect for her family and in-laws. However the more I thought about this I have decided that my target market will more likely be a middle aged mother and family orientated women possibly in the early stages of being a grandmother or perhaps has older teenagers – young adults and has a bit more expendable money.

I think I have finalised my mood boards so I mounted them onto card and used foam board for certain images to raise them which creates depth.
